Melissa Theresa Petrey Kern (1973 - March 8, 2015) was an American fan of The Lord of the Rings who played a Hobbit in the extended edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Behind the scenes[]
- Both Chris and Melissa were fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's work of Middle-earth.
- On set, since Kern was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in 2007, she rode on a wheel chair and both her feet and wheelchair were covered with two blankets.
- Kern, Peter Lapsley, Christopher Lee, Andrew Lesnie, and Richard Whiteside all passed away less than a year after The Battle of the Five Armies was released and before the release of its extended edition.
